Ethics in Public Relations

Welcome to this wiki where our focus is on understanding and furthering the integrity of public communication channels. It is for everyone who is concerned about transparency and ethics in public relations and corporate communication practice and in the media, both traditional and new.

Proponents of public relations have argued that practitioners can serve the public interest in a democratic society by assisting in the articulation of a variety of points of view. In practice, however, public relations activities often disrupt or are perceived to disrupt communication by serving special interests at the expense of the common good.

Practitioners and scholars in this field can only fulfill this ambitious goal if they have a sound understanding of the relationship between their discipline and the societal requirement for organizations of all stripes to fulfill their obligations to society. This site helps us to collaborate on developing an understanding of our obligations to ethics and the greater good.

This site was originally created by graduate students in the Department of Communication Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in the Master of Public Relations and Master of Arts (Communication) programs under the supervision of Professor Patricia Parsons.
